[PANEL 1]

At Hillsdale College

the only thing we consider “politically correct” is...

the truth.

If a college places special emphasis on anything, it has to be on truth.

That’s not to say that any particular institution has a claim on truth.  But it does mean that when speech is arbitrarily restricted, or when legitimate facts and ideas are excluded from open discussion, then no idea, no theory or proposition can be trusted.

At Hillsdale College, we resist the trend toward so-called “political correctness” by refusing funds from government or other sources that could pressure us to avoid controversial ideas or limit the search for truth.  This reflects a practice established by our founders in 1844, when their realized that their ideas about equal admissions would be controversial.

We still believe in the dignity of the individual, and we teach students to think and exercise judgment for themselves.

Your college education

should raise

a lot of questions...

but not about how you got it.

Colleges are facing enormous pressure to lower admission standards, each simpler material, push students through to graduation.  As a result, students today are too little challenged to ask the really important questions, and a college degree doesn’t necessarily indicate someone’s achievements or academic qualifications.

At Hillsdale College, we still maintain the same equal-admissions policy we pioneered in 1844, — plus the high academic standards that used to be assumed at all good liberal arts schools.  We have no double standards for student recruiting, no compensatory programs and no weighted evaluations.  Yet our graduation rate is among the highest in the country.

If you can make it at Hillsdale, you’ll have a degree that means something — to graduate schools, to future employers, to yourself.

At Hillsdale College

we honor the highest expression of cultural diversity...

the individual.

A college doesn’t attract a wide range of top-caliber students because it has a diverse student body.  Top students from all backgrounds come to a school because it offers a first-rate education.

At Hillsdale College, diversity has never been a goal.  It’s just a fact of life.  We’ve had diversity from the beginning — in 1844 — when we pioneered the concept of equal admissions, offering a classical education to individuals of any sex, race or nationality.

We’ve always treated people equally — an approach which hasn’t always been popular.  But we continue to offer all of our students a solid liberal arts education based on the Western literary tradition and our Judeo-Christian moral heritage.

It’s the kind of education that’s been the basis of achievement for people from a wide diversity of backgrounds.

At Hillsdale College you’ll find equal opportunity...

what you do with it is up to you.

Opportunity, no matter equal, is only as valuable as what you do with it.

At Hillsdale College, we offer a traditional liberal arts education that provides the background you need to take full advantage of any opportunity.  It’s an education that teaches you to think, that prepares you to make sound judgments — one that stresses a core curriculum based firmly on the Western literary tradition and out Judea-Christian moral heritage.

We’ve offered that kind of comprehensive learning experience to everyone since 1844.  In fact, we were the first college in the nation to make equal admissions part of its official charter.

And in the 150 years since, we’ve provided opportunity for people of all backgrounds who were willing to make the most of it.
